ICE to buy 100 electric cars

May 8, 2017 by Staff News Writer

With an investment of 5 million dollars, the Instituto Costarricenses de Electricidad (ICE) announced that it will buy 100 electric vehicles, sedan type, to replace the vehicles with conventional engines.

Resources would be provided by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).

The fleet will be integrated in 2018 and, along with the vehicles, 100 chargers will be purchased, which will be connected at night to ensure fleet availability during the day as well as to encourage the efficient use of energy.

Brands and models will be determined by public tender. The supplier must be a dealer established in Costa Rica, who will undertake to offer the vehicles in the national market and to install specialized workshops open to the public.

The president of the nongovernmental organization Costa Rica Limpia, Mónica Araya, said that this decisionof the ICE will have an important demonstrative effect.
T

hese 100 cars, which do not pollute, will help to break myths about these technologies, in addition to generating monthly savings in gasoline and diesel,”

said the promoter of electric transport in the country.

According to Araya, the decision to buy them sends a message to other public entities, since the purchases by the State that are made with the taxes paid by Costa Ricans should favor zero emissions vehicles and help to improve air quality.
