Condo without sewage plant is at risk of closing

February 12, 2014 by Staff News Writer

The developer of the project Vila del Lago, in Coyol of Alajuela, has until July to build the treatment plant. | PABLO Montiel.

About 200 families in the Vila del Lago condominium project in El Coyol de Alajuela suffer the uncertainty of whether they could be evicted from their homes, due to the the absence of a wastewater treatment plant. In July of 2013, the Ministry of Health issued an order that suspended any further construction until a treatment plant is installed. Home owners feel cheated as they have incurred debts with the bank.

Inspectors found that condo units had inadequate treatment plants. For example, sewage tanks located in garages have become saturated with waste and emit foul odors.

The Constitutional Court has ordered the builder, Akari Group GVL to pay damages. However, amounts were not specified and lawyers are still debating the issue.
