Inter-American Court to hear petitions on LGBT rights

May 16, 2017 by Staff News Writer

On Wednesday and Thursday, the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACHR) will hear the requests of different organizations and individuals on the rights of LGTBI people.

A year ago, the Costa Rican State submitted a request for an advisory opinion to this organization.

According to Larissa Arroyo, a lawyer and representative from the Front for Equal Rights (FDI), they ask equal access to civil marriage and the right to the name and identity of trans people.

We are asking for equal rights, to be treated in the same way as heterosexuals, that’s our aim. The question is whether those rights will be recognized in 2017 or whether we will have to wait 1, 5 or 10 more years, but the fight will not stop,”

said the FDI representative.

Arroyo said they are confident that the court will rule in favor of their requests, since in previous years it has made great progress.

In addition, the lawyer said that although human rights do not need a law to be recognized, this can make a big difference, especially since the Constitutional Chamber as well as the courts must adhere to the criteria issued.

The audiences will also be attended by organizations from Panama, Guatemala, Mexico, Argentina, Honduras, Uruguay, Bolivia, Brazil and Colombia.
