Red Cross gets “Blue Flag” for the second consecutive year

August 2, 2017 by Staff News Writer

For the second consecutive year, the Costa Rican Red Cross (CRC) won the Ecological Blue Flag in massive events, due to its “EcoRomería” campaign, with which they intend to keep the city clean during the multitudinous pilgrimage.

The environmental award was received by the institution, its employees and volunteers on August 1st with a perfect score. The campaign consists in guiding the pilgrims to deposit the garbage in specific garbage dumps.

Together with the Red Cross, EcoRomería is possible thanks to the support of the Ministry of Health, the municipalities of San José, San Pedro de Montes de Oca, Curridabat, Desamparados, La Unión and Cartago, in addition to the Costa Rican Electricity Institute (ICE), Banco Popular and others.

It is estimated that about two million people walked to the Basilica of the Angels, in Cartago, for the celebration of the Romería 2017.
