Senate confirms US ambassador to Costa Rica

August 3, 2017 by Staff News Writer

One of the most prominent leaders of the Republican Party in Florida will be the next ambassador of the United States in Costa Rica. On Thursday, the Senate approved several nominations from President Donald Trump, including Sharon Day.

According to reports in international media, the upper house agreed and gave approval to several figures nominated by Trump. Ambassadors to Peru, Costa Rica, Guatemala, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) , the United Kingdom, Italy, Portugal, Canada, Algeria, Ethiopia and Sierra Leone are included.

Before leaving for his summer vacation, the Democratic minority in the Senate allowed the nominations to advance. The new director of the US Agency for Development and Cooperation (USAID), Mark Andrew Green, was also endorsed. This body is related to countries in Latin America.

Sharon Day is 66 years old and, until January, she was number two of the Republican National Committee (RNC). According to a report, she speaks “some Spanish” and has already visited the country.

The previous US ambassador to Costa Rica was Stafford Fitzgerald Haney, who still resides in the country.

The positions in Spain, Argentina, Honduras, Paraguay and the Dominican Republic remain vacant, with no nominations, according to the United States Foreign Service Association.
