Last month was the hottest July in 137 years

August 16, 2017 by Staff News Writer

Last July was the hottest in the last 137 years, according to records released on Tuesday by the Goddard Institute for Space Studies at NASA.

The calculations indicate that last month registered an increase of 0.83 degrees Celsius compared to the average for the months of July between the years 1951 and 1980. This is a parameter normally used, but the period does not include warmer months.

Only July 2016 showed such a high temperature (0.82 degrees Celsius), all previous Julys were more than one tenth of a degree colder,”

said the NASA on a publication.

To reach this conclusion, NASA scientists use information available in approximately 6,300 weather stations around the world, the vast majority of them located on ships and buoys that measure sea surface temperature and Antarctic research stations.

The current records are compared after 1880, because before this year there was not enough instrumentation on the planet.
