Costa Rica and Mexico in “agreement phase” regarding avocado

September 5, 2017 by Staff News Writer

At the end of March this year, in the middle of the Tuxtla Summit, President Luis Guillermo Solis agreed with his Mexican counterpart, Enrique Peña Nieto, to open a process between the phytosanitary authorities of both countries to reach an agreement to resolve the conflict over avocados.

Five months after that meeting, there is still no solution on the issue. Foreign Minister Alexander Mora said on Tuesday afternoon they are in an agreement phase.

Costa Rica made asked Mexico to remove the import blockade on avocado, but so far it has not obtained a clear response from the Mexican authorities.

We are waiting for the Mexican authorities’ response to a series of proposals that we have made and that have been built interactively in meetings with them,”

said Mora, who added that the Mexicans asked for a reasonable time to analyze them.
