Suspect of Liberia’s massacre will go to trial

October 19, 2017 by Staff News Writer

The only suspect of the massacre against five young people in Libera will go to trial.

This was determined by the Liberia Criminal Court after accepting a petition filed by the local prosecutor’s office.

The subject, named Ríos Mairena, who is in pre-trial custody, went to a preliminary hearing held on Thursday in Liberias’ Courts.

The prosecution confirmed that the accused will also be prosecuted for a crime of sexual abuse to the detriment of one of the victims.

The events occurred on January 19th in a house located in La Victoria neighborhood, in Liberia.

At that time, the Judicial Investigation Agency (OIJ) ruled out some form of sexual abuse, however, the Prosecutor’s Office of Liberia brought charges for this crime against a person of legal age.

As reported by the OIJ, Ríos Mairena, 33, would have committed the heinous crime against five university students driven by a ‘compulsive and recurrent’ sexual fantasy. However, there were no signs of abuse at the beginning.

The subject was described as a hostile, aggressive, non-empathetic and with traits of sadism, that is, he gets pleasure from inflicting pain on other people.

He took advantage of the fact that everyone slept to get into the house; woke them up, threatened them with a knife and forced one of the victims to help him tie the others.

He then finished the men first and then went on to the women.

A minor managed to survive the event and identified the accused as the perpetrator.
