November 28, 2017 by Staff News Writer

On Tuesday, authorities will carry out an assessment of the damages in the structures of San Lucas Island, after a fire that affected the old headquarters, one of the buildings that made up the complex of the old Criminal Center and that was declared a Historical-Architectural Heritage since 1995.

William Monge, director of the Heritage Research and Conservation Center (CICPC), will travel to the site in coordination with Coast Guard representatives of the National System of Conservation Areas (Sinac) of the Ministry of Environment and Energy (MINAE) and the Municipality of Puntarenas, owner of the Island. Mayor Randall Chavarría, will travel with the director of the Heritage Center.

A fire consumed the building on November 25th during early morning hours. The causes are still under investigation.

p style=”text-align: justify;”>The former command and administrative building of the prison, had a construction area of 300 square meters and was restored in 2011 with a budget from the Ministry of Culture and Youth (MCJ). An amount of almost ¢ 106 million was invested in this building, which had three levels.

Later, in 2014, with money from the Costa Rican Institute of Ports of the Pacific (INCOP) and the Costa Rican Tourism Institute (ICT), the chapel, a building next to the headquarters, was restored. The director of the Heritage Center will also assess the impact on the chapel, given its proximity to the command.

The buildings of this complex were built in the 1930s and are part of the history of what was a prison from 1873 to 1991.
