Minister of Justice will leave office later this month

December 12, 2017 by Staff News Writer

Cecilia Sánchez, Minister of Justice and Peace, will step down from office on December 31st to assume the leadership of the Latin American Institute of the United Nations for the Prevention of Crime and Treatment of Offenders (Ilanud).
This was confirmed on December 11th by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Worship, through a press release. Sánchez had received the endorsement of the United Nations (UN) to fill the position; however, her appointment had not been formalized until Monday.

Sánchez will become the first woman to lead the Ilanud, an organization that was born 42 years ago with the aim of preventing crime and improving criminal justice in Latin America, under the UN vision.

The minister, mother of the questioned magistrate of Court III Celso Gamboa, devoted herself to the humanistic treatment of jails in Costa Rica. This made her win the support of the sectors that defend human rights, but she was also strongly criticized by a sector that disagrees with the privileged treatment of prisoners.

The current director of Ilanud, the Argentine professor Elías Carranza, will welcome his retirement as of December 31st. The appointment of Mrs. Sánchez has a term of three years.
