Director of Calderón Guardia Hospital: the bacterium situation is under control

December 20, 2017 by Staff News Writer

Despite the extension of the measure of not giving attention to deliveries at the Calderón Guardia Hospital due to the presence of a bacterium, the authorities of the medical center guaranteed that the situation is under control.

The director of the Hospital, Taciano Lemos, assured that with the exception of Maternity and Neonatology services, the rest of the services works normally.

The official added that with children there has already been an improvement.

Of the six cases that we had, only 1 is positive. But he’s stable for his gestational age,”

said Lemos.

The medical center reported the measure on Wednesday due to the presence of the bacterium Serriata liquefaciens, which lives in the intestines and in water. The presence of the bacterium was detected with the death of six premature babies, so now the authorities will have to determine if there was a correlation between these events.

For the safety of the children, the measure was extended until December 26th.
