SINAC requests urgent inspection after changes of color in Celeste River

January 11, 2018 by Staff News Writer

The National System of Conservation Areas (SINAC) requested an urgent inspection after coloration changes in Celeste River, in Guatuso de Alajuela.

A seismic swarm that started on Tuesday would have caused landslides in areas near Tenorio Volcano, which in turn converge on the popular river. This swarm followed the 7.6-magnitude earthquake that hit the Atlantic coast of Honduras on Tuesday night. That movement had its origin in the Swan fault.

At midday this Thursday, the Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Costa Rica (OVSICORI) reported that the seismic swarm began on January 9th after 8:56 p.m.

During the morning there have been about 10 earthquakes with magnitudes ranging from two to five degrees, which have been perceived very strongly by the inhabitants of nearby areas and slightly in the Central Valley of our country. The seismicity is located to the South East of the Tenorio massif. No other type of activity has been reported in this volcano, “

said Floribeth Vega, a seismologist at the entity.
