Calderón expressed his concern over poverty reduction to Carlos Alvarado

March 1, 2018 by Staff News Writer

The candidate of the Citizen Action Party, Carlos Alvarado, and former president Rafael Ángel Calderón, met to address several topics, but focused mainly on two: the economic and social problems of the country, specifically referring to poverty.

My government ended 24 years ago. It was the last government that brought poverty down in this country and since then we have not succeeded. Costa Rica needs a government really invested in achieving poverty reduction,”

said Calderón.

In 2016, the current administration, with Alvarado included as Minister of Labor, celebrated the reduction of poverty in approximately one percentage point. According to Calderón, that reduction is only minimal and the country needs to face this problem more strongly.

For the candidate, the experience and observations of the man who ruled the country from 1990 to 1994, are valuable for a future government to start on May 8th.

On Wednesday, Calderón met with Fabricio Alvarado, from National Restoration, an encounter that focused on solving the fiscal deficit. The former president told Fabricio how he managed to solve that problem at that time.
