Authorities deny opening Turrialba Volcano to the public

March 13, 2018 by Staff News Writer

The National Commission of Emergencies (CNE) denied an information spread on Monday morning about a possible opening of Turrialba Volcano to the public. According to Blas Sánchez, a geologist from the CNE, access to the volcano’s summit has never been authorized.

Since 2012, it has restricted access by recommendation of the Technical Advisory Committee on Vulcanology. This is mainly due to the danger of approaching within a radius of two kilometers around the active crater. And while some people make excursions to this area, these are forbidden and people are exposed to damage by ash, gases or falling rocks,”

explained the expert.
