Smoke from fire in Nicaragua covers populations in the North of Costa Rica

April 5, 2018 by Staff News Writer

Two thousand hectares of the Indio Maíz Biological Reserve, Nicaragua, remain in flames at 40 areas of the Municipality El Castillo on the San Juan River, and the smoke spread to Costa Rican territory.

The most affected areas in Costa Rica go from Guatuso to Colonia Puntarena, according to local residents.

The information of those in charge of the place indicates that the fire was caused by a producer who invaded the reserve. Members of the Río Foundation monitor the progress of the fire, which is presumed to have started last Tuesday, three kilometers from San Juan de Nicaragua.

The fire spread because there are trees in the place that have oil and that generate more combustion, in addition to the trees that fell during Hurricane Otto in 2016.

Firefighters in Costa Rica remain vigilant of the situation, but there is little they can do since the emergency comes from across the border.
