Last weekend, three men used a vehicle to tear apart the gates that serve as a barrier in Turrialba Volcano, in Cartago. With the force of the vehicle, they moved the structure to enter and then reach the top, an area that’s closed to the tourists.
This event was reported to the Public Force. However, the three men were on the run, according to the National Commission of Emergencies (CNE).
This barrier was placed to prevent the passage of people through this area, which according to the CNE is a dangerous, hostile and toxic environment, since the volcano expelled rocks, toxic gases and experiences variations in temperature.
The CNE says it’s unacceptable that first response agencies have to conduct rescues in these high-risk places.
The relief corps should not operate in conditions where they expose themselves to serious consequences due to the irresponsibility of others. There is no possibility of recovering a body inside the active crater of Turrialba Volcano,”
said the institution.
Once again, the CNE asks the population to comply with the orders of the institutions.
Blas Sánchez, geologist from the National Emergency Commission (CNE), said that not respecting signage is a problem of all national parks in the country.
The expert pointed out that Rincon de la Vieja Volcano National Park consists of three parts, one is Pailas and the other is Santamaría, which are the sites that are open to visitation and there are official trails.
However, the third part, the part with craters and other trails that lead to the top, the different cones and active crater, is restricted since 2012 because it poses a danger to people,”
explained Sánchez.
