Cyclists will escort President to Ceremony for the Transfer of Powers

May 8, 2018 by Staff News Writer

Within the activities for the transfer of powers of the Republic, a group of cyclists will escort the new president, Carlos Alvarado, between La Sabana and Plaza de la Democracia. The ceremony will be held on May 8th. At 8:00 a.m. Alvarado will begin his journey as a President.

With this initiative, the groups and organizations of urban cycling seek to demonstrate the country’s inclination for peace.

While in other countries the presidents are escorted by their armies, here we do it by bicycle,”

said Jorge Mora of the Urban Cycling Collective Las Luciérnagas, one of the organizers of the activity.

In Costa Rica there are 1,400,000 motor vehicles, with an average occupancy of 1.3 people per vehicle and a growth rate of 55 thousand units each year. Public roads are insufficient for cars, which causes high levels of urban stress, noise, and environmental pollution.

The new Government has announced its intention to reverse the mobility pyramid, whose peak is occupied by the motor vehicle and lastly by the pedestrian. With a change, priority would be given to non-motorized transport systems (such as bicycles, skates, skateboards, scooters), to public transport (trains, subways, trams and buses), to freight, and finally to private vehicles.

More than a month ago, the bike path was inaugurated in San José, linking San Pedro with La Sabana, on a 13-kilometer route.
