Union asks Alvarado to listen to the most unprotected class

May 8, 2018 by Staff News Writer

The Confederation of Workers Rerum Novarum asked the new President of the Republic, Carlos Alvarado, to listen to the most unprotected class and implement progressive tax reforms based on income.

Lenin Hernández, president of the Confederation, made a call to the new president so that during his administration he never forgets those with the greatest needs.

According to the Economic and Social Observatory of the National University (OES-UNA) the income inequality of the Costa Rican people continues to be high and confirms that the richest 20% of households (808,574 families) have 50.9% of the country’s income,”

says the Confederation.

Hernández stressed that in this country the problem of economic inequality is very serious with the aggravating factor that unemployment increases every year, with a rate of 9.3% of the population. He stressed that in order to confront the inequality of income and wealth, important changes are needed in national and global tax policies, therefore, transparency in terms of access to information on economic activities are key to achieving that objective.

According to Hernández, the new President must promote a true social dialogue where the different sectors of the country, allowing for sufficient support to take measures in a timely manner, because economic reactivation alone will not be enough, since an inclusive development model that distributes wealth is required.
