Project sensitizes Osa children about threats to biodiversity

May 17, 2018 by Staff News Writer

Turismo Ecológico de Golfito

In order to prevent a series of illegal activities from passing down from generation to generation in the Osa Peninsula, a project seeks to sensitize the children of that area about the threat that this represents for biodiversity.

The project of social action is in charge of the Golfito Campus of the University of Costa Rica (UCR) that is committed to the formation of students of one-teacher schools against illegal hunting, deforestation, and the extraction of gold in Osa.

The 12 educational centers participating in this project are located within the protected area of the Golfo Dulce Forest Reserve and in the vicinity of the Corcovado National Park, which are areas that have been threatened by harmful activities for decades.

According to Diego Araya, project coordinator and professor of Ecological Tourism, it is vital to educate new generations to recognize the value of natural resources, mainly in a place like Osa, which owns 2.5% of the global biodiversity.

As part of the dynamics to gradually change the vision of children and promote a more respectful relationship with nature, local festivals, bird counting activities and talks on the proper management of solid waste are carried out.
