Minister of Security on the situation in the country: “The picture is gloomy”

June 8, 2018 by Staff News Writer

Security Minister, Michael Soto Rojas, announced on Thursday that the Public Force has a deficit of 5,500 million colones to operate. This was expressed in the Narcotics Commission of the Legislative Assembly where he even assured there are 65 delegations in firing conditions.

Soto said that the economic issue surprised him, because he believed that he would have sufficient resources after the corporation tax was approved. However, there are no resources for delegations or vehicles. He said that it was expected that the Ministry would receive about 17 billion colones, of which more than half would be used to pay the new policemen’s salary.

The minister explained that crime rates are high and will try to come down with frequent mega-operations that will be focused on crimes such as robberies and vehicle thefts.

Soto added that the most urgent projects that would help hit organized crime would be domain extinction, blocking cellular signals in prisons, and opening a discussion about the use of weapons in national territory.

In response to the consultation of Limón legislators for the actions of the Ministry in the Atlantic Zone, Soto said that important strategies have been made but that social actions should be given more space.
