La Sabana breathes again

June 19, 2018 by Staff News Writer

The replacement of 300 trees in La Sabana started last Friday. This initiative began eight years ago, in 2011 when the deterioration of the trees was obvious and it became a risk to the community. The project aims to recover the ecological functionality of the metropolitan park.

The goal for the end of the year is to plant 450 more trees, 80% of the substitution has already been carried out. Armando Soto, technical coordinator of this project and representative of Scotiabank, commented on the expectations of the project and stated that it is expected to reach 2019 with 5,000 native trees.

We started with the eighth stage of intervention of La Sabana, which includes the replacement of 300 damaged trees, sick or in poor condition, and the planting of about 450 new individuals in the park,”

said Soto.

The first day of volunteering will take place on July 20th, on the south side of the National Stadium. The participation of at least 80 people is expected, who will have the responsibility of planting 85 trees, from 10 to 15 different species.

Vivian Ortega, ICODER project management manager, commented on the good figures presented by the project. With eight years of existence, the project had an estimate of suffering 40% of delinquency, either from the theft of trees, or damage caused to them. However, only 1% of delinquency has been recorded in the project. The importance of rejuvenating the park was mentioned, since La Sabana is seen as the biological lung in the city.
