Committee says landslide in Santo Domingo could have been prevented

June 21, 2018 by Staff News Writer

The Defense Committee of the Virilla River indicated through a statement that for more than a year it has tried to raise awareness and demand actions regarding the alleged invasion of the Virilla river basin by a private company.

A tragedy occurred on Thursday that we have been denouncing for months: a landslide in Santo Domingo caused the loss of a human life,”

said the institution through a statement.

The organization added that the constant bad land management, the illegal change of the river canal, and the occupation without authorization of the company that is located where the river originally was, are part of the complications in this area that led to the tragedy.

The organization stressed that for more than 10 years these facts have been denounced, and affirm that until today no public institution has decided to act to defend the riverbed and the safety of the hundreds of citizens that live around the riverbed.

We demand actions from the Municipalities of Heredia and Moravia on this issue and we hope that public institutions will act immediately to prevent some other tragedy of this magnitude,”

added the CME.
