“Solar farms”, a new trend of renewable energy

June 27, 2018 by Staff News Writer

Allocating a portion of a land to the “cultivation” of electricity is one of the trends that has become relevant to obtain renewable energy in many parts of the world. The concept of “solar farms” involves a surface of land where solar panels are installed with main objective of producing energy on a large scale for sale.

In Latin America there are several examples, such as that of Celsia in Colombia, a company that installed the first large-scale solar generation plant to deliver power to the National Interconnected System. This company also has operations in Costa Rica, where it manages the Guanacaste Wind Farm in Bagaces.

However, it is now looking for local entrepreneurs to present them with the advances of the solar panel industry and explore the possibility of leading the industry to a possible 100% renewable energy matrix.

According to the company, large investments in the energy sector point to the region with different large projects and Costa Rica is an excellent destination to implement them, given that it is a country that is working hard on renewable energy.

The first project developed in Costa Rican soil was the installation of a solar roof, in which 224 polycrystalline modules of 320 watts each and a total power of 72 kWp were placed in the cookie factory located in La Uruca. This will generate 104,300 kWh per year, enough to supply 34 average houses in Costa Rica.

The company is present in Colombia, Panama, and Costa Rica, and it has a generating capacity of 2,399 MW from 28 hydroelectric, thermal, photovoltaic, wind, and solar power plants that generate around 7,750 GWh per year.

Some of the solutions offered are solar energy, through photovoltaic systems, thermal districts, efficient lighting and backup energy. The company optimizes the energy resource of other companies with diagnostic and implementation plans, which allow energy to be used as a resource to increase productivity. Its business model performs tests, analysis, and recommendations to equipment and electrical installations, in addition to the design and execution of said installations.
