Strange reddish coloration dyed Ocloro River

July 5, 2018 by Staff News Writer

Ocloro River. Roger Miranda

On Wednesday, the waters of Ocloro River near Barrio Pinto in San Pedro de Montes de Oca turned a particular reddish color, which causes amazement in those who pass through the sector.

I walk every day around here and this is the first time I see it like that, who knows what will happen,”

said Maritza Sequeira, a resident of Granadilla.

According to Gustavo Lara, head of the Office of Environmental Management of the Municipality, it is a very strong color that requires a chemical study.

The issue is that at the moment the reason behind the phenomenon is unknown. The river is born in Curridabat and that color doesn’t start there, but between Plaza del Sol and Yamuni, that’s where the red coloration begins,”

said Lara.

He also added that they will wait until Thursday to see if the situation continues and to order that several samples be taken from the water to determine why the river changed color and if this could have some impact on the environment.

The neighbors have several theories to explain the phenomenon, including trucks pouring some pollutants in the canal.

The National Emergency Commission (CNE) confirmed that as a result of this situation there are no reports of damages in nearby communities.
