Environmentalists ask Fanal to quit plastic

July 10, 2018 by Staff News Writer

Different environmental groups requested the National Liquor Factory (Fanal) to reduce the use of plastic materials in their products and thus reduce the impact on the environment.

The request is part of a pronouncement made by Preserve Planet for all government institutions to align with the “National Strategy for Single-Use Plastic Replacement”, which seeks to replace packaging materials in public institutions, municipalities, and other businesses, for more environmentally friendly alternatives.

More than 60 public and private institutions have joined this strategy led by the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Environment and Energy, and it is expected that the number will continue to increase.

It is estimated that more than five billion pieces of plastic are floating on the surface of the sea, plus the amount of plastic that sinks.

We know that plastics represent about 13% of solid waste in the world and that 5% of the world population is able to discard, every five minutes, as many plastic bottles it takes to cover eight football fields,”

said the organization.

According to the World Economic Forum, the excessive use of plastic will cause the seas to have more plastic than fish by 2050.
