ABO-incompatible successful kidney transplant

May 12, 2016 by Staff News Writer

For the first time, surgeons from Hospital México performed a kidney transplant to a 23-year-old man, whose donor had a different blood type.

The surgery took place on May, 4th and, unlike patients who receive compatible transplants, this patient had to undergo ten days of especial treatments in the hospital prior to the surgery, since his blood type is O and the donor’s is A.

The kidney is now functioning successfully and the patient is in perfect conditions.

Until now, those with kidney failure and in need of kidney transplant had to wait for a donor with compatible blood type from groups A, B and O.

Now, the preparation for this new procedure could have an additional cost of ¢10 million, that ABO-compatible procedures don’t contemplate.
