Epsy Campbell was not convincing

October 25, 2018 by Staff News Writer

After almost two hours of discussion, the Vice President and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Epsy Campbell, failed to convince the legislators of the legality and suitability of the appointments and decisions she has made.

The legislators warned the Vice President they will be very attentive to each of her moves and actions.

On Thursday, Campbell appeared before the Public Expenditure Commission of the Legislative Assembly, to refer to the opposition’s questioning just six months after becoming the first woman to head the Foreign Ministry and the first Afro-descendant to be Vice-President.

The accusations came after a series of publications from CRHoy.com, for alleged irregularities in the rise of official positions, appointments of friends and people close to Campbell – such as her goddaughter – and decisions that could be illegal.

Campbell admitted she appointer her goddaughter as an advisor in her office, when questioned by legislator Yorleni León. The Chancellor argued they are not related by blood and that all the requirements are met. León replied that when Campbell was a legislator in the last administration she censured these practices.

All my actions are subject to the internal control of the Foreign Ministry and public scrutiny. I have been consistent throughout my career in defending transparency, ethics in the public service and accountability. Therefore, I would never act against my principles,”

said Campbell.
