500 murders and counting

November 7, 2018 by Staff News Writer

With just two months before the end of the year, the national authorities report 500 homicides during 2018.

The most recent case occurred on Monday night in the sector Manuel de Jesús Jiménez, in the central canton of Cartago. There, the rescue authorities located two men who were shot and then burned. One of them died while the second was seriously ill.

It is presumed that the house where they were located was used as a bunker for the consumption of drugs.

The Judicial Investigation Agency (OIJ) explained on Tuesday morning that the deceased could not be identified. The second victim, a 25-year-old man named Alfaro, was admitted to Calderón Guardia Hospital with severe burns and a shot woud in the neck.

When the murder figures exceed 500 homicides, national authorities enter the final stretch to try and decrease it. The year 2017 ended with 603 cases and in the words of Security Minister Michael Soto, the idea is to reduce that figure. The hierarch explained that the statistical estimates at the beginning of the year were close to 625 cases.
