Authorities caught cousins from the gang behind “pineapple mules”

November 7, 2018 by Staff News Writer

The Drug Control Police (PCD) caught two men who are cousins and belong to a gang behind international drug trafficking. The organization used pineapple exports as a screen to send cocaine from Costa Rica to Europe.

On Wednesday, the PCD raided two homes in Venecia de San Carlos in Alajuela, where they captured the leader named Camacho Artavia, a 37-year-old Costa Rican with no record. In addition, they arrested his cousin identified as Alfaro Camacho, a 36-year-old Costa Rican who has a complaint for crimes against property.

In the buildings, a 52-centimeter high marijuana bush was also confiscated.

It is worth mentioning that on January 18th, 2018, the PCD began the investigation against this criminal organization that operated near an educational center in San Carlos.

In addition, information was obtained from the Spanish Police, which indicated that the criminal structure was manipulating the body of the pineapple to introduce the drug that was exported to Belgium and the Netherlands, where it was marketed.

In Costa Rica, the PCD determined that Camacho Artavia had an active participation as leader, since he was in charge of obtaining fruit that fulfilled the characteristics required for drug concealment.

This investigation was supported by the Directorate of Intelligence and Security (DIS) and the DEA.
