President: “I’m not here to be popular”

November 23, 2018 by Staff News Writer

President Carlos Alvarado downplayed possible repercussions of the perception of his image through surveys. This Thursday, the Center for Research and Political Studies (CIEP) of the University of Costa Rica (UCR) published its most recent survey on citizen perception. In the analysis, Alvarado’s image was rated by the respondents with a 5 on a scale of 1 to 10.

In the previous evaluation, published in September, the president obtained a 4.3. That is, there was a slight increase that keeps him at an ‘intermediate’ rating level.

When asked about it, Alvarado emphasized that popularity is not something that keeps him awake at night and he understands the repercussion that the struggle for the approval of the fiscal plan causes on his image.

I am not here to be popular and I would be wrong to try to be popular in a context as complex as Costa Rica. I am here to solve the problems of the country,”

said the president, in an activity on the security plan for Christmas and New Year.

Alvarado has used all the scenarios to reiterate the urgency of approving the fiscal reform plan to restructure public finances and to avoid possible negative outcomes for the national economy.
