Costa Rica wants to host the world conference on climate change

December 3, 2018 by Staff News Writer

Carlos Alvarado announced the government’s intention of having the country host the Conference of the parties (COP25) on climate change to be held from November 11th to 22nd, 2019. COP25 is the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

Uncertainty about the venue increased, after Jair Bolsonaro, president-elect of Brazil, canceled the candidacy.

The request was informed on Saturday morning, during the commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the abolition of the army, a celebration focused on the new challenges of the country to “abolish” other practices such as the use of fossil fuels, which ultimately helps to stop global warming.

The leader of the Republic pointed out that climate change is one of the great challenges and that it’s our responsibility to fight it; he even argued that it is stronger than the threat of war.

Alvarado said that a negative response will not stop the country from moving towards the decarbonization of the economy. He recalled the importance of using electric vehicles, although he believes that the country should also use the electric matrix to transform agricultural and industrial production.

The hierarch pointed out that this is only the beginning, therefore, future administrations will have to continue with this path.
