Women gave birth twins inside a flying aircraft

May 15, 2016 by Staff News Writer

Rebeca Areola, 23 years old, gave birth to twins on Saturday night while on an emergency flight from Liberia de Guanacaste until San Jose, which distance from each other is around 100 miles that usually a plane could cover within 50 minutes.

Because of complicantions in pregnancy, the air-ambulance was called a few minutes after midnight on Saturday by personal of the “Caja Costarricense del Seguro Social (CCSS)”. After giving birth and landing, the woman was taken to “Base Dos” in Alajuela and from there to “Hospital México” in San José.

The light plane that carried the woman was piloted by Victor Barrientos, copilot Randall Soto and also aboard were a doctor and a medical assistant.

Still 12-mile short to land, the woman gave birth to one of her twins. The second baby-girl was delivered when the plane was already on the ground.

Paramedic personal attended the mother and her twins. They are all in good health conditions, according to an official report.

“I feel moved for giving support to these operations. Thank God we got there as soon as possible and medical assistance was provided to the patient and her babies”, said the captain Víctor Barrientos, who has been working in this unit for 15-years.

The twins were born at the week 32 of pregnancy. In multiple labor is common that premature delivery occurs.
