Costa Rica will have new trains in 2020

December 6, 2018 by Staff News Writer

The government purchased new trains from China, and they will allow Costa Ricans to travel much more comfortably than before.

The eight new trains were purchased from the CRRC Quingdao Sifang Co., Ltd. factory through direct negotiation. Each train has the latest in technology and two “Diesel Mutiple Unit”, which will be manufactured according to the technical specifications requested by Incofer.

The 38-meter long transportation units will have a capacity of 372 passengers, air conditioning, preferential seating, and space for two wheelchairs, each. They will also have a passenger information model that includes the train’s radio system (the driver’s intercom and the passenger’s emergency alarm) and the information display system through LED screens.

In addition, they have a high-resistance stainless steel body that expands the lifespan of the units up to 30 years, as well as more efficient engines that produce less internal and external noise and less contamination.

The total investment was $32.6 million.
