Costa Rica to preside extraordinary session of the OAS to evaluate Nicaragua

December 26, 2018 by Staff News Writer

On December 27th the Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OAS) will hold an extraordinary session to evaluate compliance with human rights in Nicaragua. The session will be chaired by Costa Rica, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MREC).

The country will preside over the session through its permanent representative in the OAS, the former Ombudsman Montserrat Solano Carboni.

Lorena Aguilar, Minister of Foreign Affairs, said that Solano will raise her voice to denounce the repeated abuses against human rights and freedom in Nicaragua.

The country reiterated its credibility and respect for the Mission Report of the Interdisciplinary Group of Independent Experts (GIEI) that accused the regime of President Daniel Ortega of committing crimes against humanity since April 19th this year, when the crisis began in Nicaragua.

In response to the report, Ortega expelled this mission from his country and accused it of being “interventionist”.

Since then, there have been more than 500 deaths as a result of demonstrations and police repression. The public eye turned to Nicaragua again last Friday when they arrested the director and the head of information of the independent media 100% News Miguel Mora and LucĂa Pineda, respectively.
