Government wants to open doors for abortion

May 17, 2016 by Staff News Writer

Legislator Mario Redondo denounced the government’s intention to extend regulations to therapeutic abortion in the country by decree.

“Following a commission with the Ministry of Health where a decree to regulate therapeutic abortion is being analyzed, we understand that the Executive Branch has met with international organizations and Marvin Carvajal and it’s commited to adopt regulations on the subject of abortion, which is illegal and goes beyond what the law states”, said the the legislator.

Therapeutic abortion in Costa Rica is only guaranteed when there is a risk to the woman’s life. In late March, the Human Rights Committee of the United Nations (UN) recommended Costa Rica to extend the practice if the child carries a fatal malformation, or was the product of incest or rape.
