US media praises Costa Rican education, but criticizes insecurity and government lines

April 19, 2019 by Staff News Writer

Different US media reproduced an opinion column entitled “The exception that is Costa Rica,” which tries to explain why Costa Ricans do not appear in the waves of migration that are arriving in that country.

The article praises Costa Rican education, but at the same time warns of the security problem after the death of three tourists during 2018.

The US authorities have reported arrivals of up to 100 thousand illegal people per month to the border with Mexico and most of them are from El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala and Mexico.

This is why the columnist Cal Thomas dedicated his article to the country and it was published by media such as Fox News, the Washington Times, Orlando Sentinel, among others.

President Carlos Alvarado told the analyst that the country invests 8% of GDP in education and that human talent and the well-being of the population are among the main national resources.

The opinion article also highlights that in Costa Rica there are no established gangs as in other countries of the region, however, it does highlight the increase in crime.

The publication mentions the death of three foreign tourists in the second half of 2018 as a result of crime. It also talks about the impact that this could have on tourism, the main national economic activity, as well as the bureaucracy that the private sector has to face.

In fact, the analyst concludes that the government should pay more attention to security and tourism, but regrets that the Administration’s lines focus on issues such as climate change, decarbonization and same-sex marriage.
