Government requests assistance from the World Bank to help migrants

April 29, 2019 by Staff News Writer

The Costa Rican government asked the World Bank (WB) for help to assist migrants who arrive on national soil. Chancellor Manuel Ventura Robles made the request at a meeting in Washington with Seynabou Sakho, director for Central America of the WB.

Ventura explained to the WB authorities the situation that Costa Rica is experiencing with the increase in refugee applications between 2018 and 2019, and which are mostly from Nicaraguans.

The representative of the World Bank expressed the willingness of the international financial agency to help mitigate the situation.

The meeting also analyzed the various projects that the WB is developing in Costa Rica, including one on sustainable fishing that seeks to promote development in coastal areas, the first stages of development of the electric passenger train project, as well as support for the preliminary meeting of the Climate Change Summit (Pre-COP), to be held during the fourth quarter of this year in San José.
