Lightning, steam and stars, a night in Turrialba Volcano

June 5, 2019 by Staff News Writer

Technology allows us to see things that were unimaginable many years ago and observing the behavior of an active volcano during the night hours was something that was not available to many.

The cameras installed by the Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Costa Rica (OVSICORI) of the National University (UNA) recorded four hours of the night of June 2nd in Turrialba volcano and its surroundings.

The images show a hot spot in one of the walls of the active crater, as part of the incandescent material that comes out of the colossus. Similarly, the video captures the lightning and the electrical storm that is generated in more remote areas.

María Martínez, from the Ovsicori, gave some notes on the reality of the massif and its most immediate impact on the surrounding points.

In that sector of the volcano acid rain and gases have killed the vegetation because they often go in that direction due to the prevailing winds. The pastures are also affected to a lesser degree because the gases and acid rain are more diluted and the wind takes them over the pastures from time to time and not all the time as in the places where everything is burned and without forest. The yellow grasslands are affected at a level called chlorosis,”

explained the official.
