School in San Carlos has two neutral bathrooms

June 17, 2019 by Staff News Writer

At the La Florencia School in San Carlos, students and staff have two bathrooms for those who require it, in addition to traditional sanitary batteries.

According to Norman Castro, director of the educational center, the initiative is part of the school’s strategies to eradicate any form of bullying. The bathrooms are individual and can be used by men or women.

Beyond the neutral bathroom, we to want to prevent and protect everyone. These bathrooms are individual and shared by all. It is not that men can enter the women’s bathroom. These bathrooms can be used by those who may be suffering from bullying,”

said Castro.

He also indicated that the response of the student community has been favorable and it was explained to them that it is not an exclusive bath for a single sector, but rather it is a resource available to anyone who needs it.

The initiative comes after the Ministry of Public Education (MEP) indicated some proposals through the protocol against LGBT + discrimination and the educational center decided to adapt it.

The protocol issued by the MEP implements important changes in schools and colleges in the country. These changes seek to generate less violent spaces against the expression of sexual diversity, for the benefit of the LGBT + population.

The document establishes, among other measures, that the personnel of all educational centers must allow trans students to use the health service corresponding to the gender with which they identify.

He also called for intimate places for this population in the locker room, since these spaces are more violent because they are out of adult control.

The trans population may also use the uniform according to the gender with which they self-identify.
