Electric rates would increase “to avoid ICE financial imbalance”

June 28, 2019 by Staff News Writer

Electricity rates would increase as of next quarter, following the methodology for the extraordinary adjustment in the electricity service published in the official Gazzete.

This document issued by the Intendancy of Energy is called “Methodology for the extraordinary adjustment of electricity service rates, product of variations in the cost of fuels (CVC) used in thermal generation for national consumption ” for the service by ICE and the distribution service of all distribution companies.

This methodology

allows quarterly adjustments to be made in the rates of the ICE generation system for thermal generation, which cause direct, positive or negative variations in the expenses for energy purchases made by the distribution companies of the country. This is why the methodology also provides for an extraordinary procedure, which is calculated simultaneously with the adjustments of the ICE generation system to avoid financial imbalances in the distribution systems,”

said the document published in the scope of this Thursday.

According to the Public Services Authority (Aresep)

this methodology has complementary objectives, to avoid the financial imbalance of the ICE for fuel consumption for thermal generation and send correct and timely price signals to users.”

The publication refers to the Costa Rican Electricity Institute (ICE), the Administrative Board of the Municipal Electricity Service of Cartago (Jasec), the Public Services Company of Heredia (ESPH), as well as the cooperatives Coopelesca, CoopeGuanacaste, CoopeSantos and CoopeAlfaro.
