Volunteers collected garbage and planted trees in Montes de Oca

July 15, 2019 by Staff News Writer

About 60 people of different nationalities joined this Saturday in the canton of Montes de Oca, as part of a cleaning-and-reforestation day.

Attendees planted guava and jacaranda trees at different points of Los Negritos creek and surrounding municipal parks. They also picked up garbage.

The objective is to increase the arboreal mass in the canton in order to reach carbon neutrality. We are committed to the country goal so that Costa Rica is one of the first territories in the world to be carbon neutral,”

explained Marcel Soler, mayor of Montes de Oca.

In addition to the Local Government, volunteers from the embassies of Colombia, Venezuela, the European Union, and non-governmental institutions such as the Madre Tierra Verde Foundation and the education sector such as the University of Costa Rica and Universidad Latina participated.

On the last day of #ReforestaChallenge, the municipality managed to reforest Montes de Oca with more than 400 trees.
