Three major hospitals with CT scans out of order

May 20, 2016 by Staff News Writer

The intensive use for many years has finally taken a toll on the CT scans of three of the main national hospitals: México, San Juan de Dios y Calderón de la Guardia.

These malfunctions have triggered a crisis in the social security system (CCSS), which is considering buying services to third parties and resorting to the Trauma Hospital of the National Insurances Institute (INS).

The CT scans of San Vicente Paúl Hospital, in Heredia, and Hospital Nacional de Niños, are receiving inpatient and emergencies refered by affected hospitals after 4 pm. The Heredia’s hospital is working 24 hours since last Tuesday.

The director of the Heredia’s hospital, Roberto Cervantes, said their CT scan has been working well. But it requires a replacement of an energy tube, which has been postponed until the emergency ends.

Ten out of 29 hospitals run by CCSSS have CT scans. The three units that failed had nine years operating continuously but their lifespan is seven years.
