Deaths caused by guaro with methanol increase to 29

The authorities already account for 29 fatalities due to consumption of guaro with methanol, according to the press department of the Ministry of Health.

According to Salud, after the investigation of deaths due to suspected methanol poisoning, three new deaths occurred in August for the same cause in Guanacaste, Heredia and San José. The last confirmed case occurred on August 28th in Desamparados.

The number of methanol poisonings is 76, of which 15 occurred in August, when there was a decrease in cases in relation to July in which 50 cases were reported.

The victims are 22 men and seven women, aged between 37 and 87, mostly from San José.

According to statistics of the entity, they have seized more than 66 thousand containers of alcoholic beverages with health alerts issued in previous weeks. The operation was carried out in conjunction with the Fiscal Control Police, the Public Force and the municipal police.

The operations continue throughout the country with the objective of reducing consumer exposure to adulterated products to 100%.
