Alvarado downplays popular discontent towards him and his government

September 12, 2019 by Staff News Writer

President Carlos Alvarado was not concerned about the precipitous fall of his popularity and the increase in citizen discontent towards his administration.

The most recent survey of the Center for Research and Political Studies (CIEP) of the University of Costa Rica, released on Wednesday, reveals widespread discontent against Alvarado and his management in the government. While for 12 months 36% of the citizens disapproved of his management, today 65% give a negative assessment to the government.

To this we must add that citizen support for the Alvarado Quesada administration went from 35% to 21%. On a scale of 0 to 10, where 10 would be the best evaluation, the President went from 5.0 in March this year to 3.9 in August.

My great concern as president is to change things. My great concern is to untie the knots that stop the development of this country at any cost. If I have to generate some types of rejection in some sectors at some point I understand that it is part of my task. I won’t stop complying with my duty due to popularity,”

said Alvarado.

The President insisted that his administration has changed things that others have not, emphasizing the issue of the tax reform.
