May 21, 2016 by Staff News Writer

A Costa Rican woman will help to develop the initiative Ocean Grazer, a project that consist in building a giant platform in the middle of sea to produce enough energy to light up 70,000 houses.

Jenifer Brenes, Electronic Engineer student at Technology Institute of Costa Rica (ITCR), will travel to the Netherlands for doing her thesis through an internship at Groningen University.

Brenes is making arrangements to travel Europe in August. She will work on her final project of her bachelor degree, along with the group of Dutch scientists that are working on the ambitious energetic project in the middle of sea.

The structure dimensions are 1,427 feet of diameter and 837 feet high. The power plant will generate and store kinetic energy created by waves.

“What makes this project different to any other is its design capable to adjust to changeable width and frequency of waves. Many of devices use today loses effectiveness when tide lowers or waves frequency slows”, Brenes said.
