Ovsicori: There were 662 earthquakes in September

October 7, 2019 by Staff News Writer

A total of 662 earthquakes were registered in the country during September, according to a report by the Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Costa Rica (OVSICORI) of the National University (UNA). However, the institution still works on the full catalog of the month, so the number of events could increase.

According to the report, the seismically most active day was the 3rd, with a total of 58 tremors. The largest event was 5.0 on September 18th at 11:23 pm. This quake was located 20 kilometers south of Quepos, Puntarenas, and was widely perceived by the population of the Central Valley.

The tremor was generated inside the Coco plate, due to the deformation imposed by the normal subduction process that occurs off the Pacific coast of Costa Rica.

During August, a total of 843 earthquakes were registred by the OVSICORI seismographic network and the most active day was the 22nd, with a total of 43 tremors.

With almost 150 earthquakes above the month of September, August is projected as the most seismically active month of the year.

During these two months, the regions of the Central Valley, the Central and South Pacific, the entrance to the Gulf of Nicoya, as well as the Burica Peninsula stand out as the most seismically active regions of the country.
