Christiana Figueres at PreCOP: “This generation can change course”

October 9, 2019 by Staff News Writer

Costa Rican Christiana Figueres, former executive secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention (UN) on Climate Change, was responsible for opening the meeting prior to the United Nations Conference on Climate Change, the PreCOP25, this Tuesday.

The renowned national economist and anthropologist opened the conference, in which 1,500 people participate, inviting them to reflect on the challenges posed by climate change and global warming generated by humans.

Figueres called for more political decisions to be made by governments, thinking about the world that will be left to new generations. Figures insisted that never before in the history of mankind have people had the possibility to change the course of history in terms of conservation.

We already know the political positions of the countries. Now let’s think about solutions. Every citizen of this planet must be concerned about the future of children in each of the countries. In the history of mankind, people had never had the possibility of writing a new course of history. And today this generation has that great opportunity,”

said Figueres.

As UN Secretary for Climate Change, Figueres led the Paris Agreement negotiations, achieved in 2016 at COP21.

As of this Tuesday, Costa Rica is hosting the previous meeting before the Conference of the Parties (COP), the most important climate event in the world. This year it will be held in Chile between December 2nd and 13th.

As reported by the Presidency and the Ministry of Environment, throughout the week there will be around 70 activities between forums, talks, conferences, round tables, political dialogues and high-level panels.

The activity will have three thematic axes: solutions based on nature, the role of the oceans and mobility and sustainable cities.
