NGO suggests Costa Rica to declare humanitarian crisis due to massive flow of Nicaraguans

October 16, 2019 by Staff News Writer

The Center for Social Rights of the Migrant Person (Cenderos), foresees that in the coming months there will be a new migration flow to Costa Rica from Nicaragua, which will force the government to declare a humanitarian crisis.

Adilia Eva Solís, spokeswoman for Cenderos, believes that the issue of assistance to migrants is somewhat complex since it requires comprehensive responses from the Costa Rican State and suggests that the proposals and recommendations given by the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights to the government of Costa Rica.

We believe that would mean a declaration of humanitarian emergency for a flow of about 100,000 Nicaraguans at the end of the year,”

said Solis.

Solís added that it is required that immigration policies be carried out in an integral way, because it is not only to give them the status of refuge, but also to access work, housing, education.

Cendereos anticipates that the number of Nicaraguans to Costa Rica can range from 100,000 in the coming months.

According to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, IACHR, some 70,000 Nicaraguans have emigrated from Nicaragua due to the socio-political crisis in the country.
