The Government of the Republic yielded to the university authorities and student representation and signed an agreement on Tuesday , after a negotiation session that lasted for almost 5 hours, with the intention of guaranteeing the operation of the public universities.
The document respects university autonomy, guarantees that classifications of the Special Fund for Higher Education (FEES) that have not been approved by universities should not be given.
The President of the Republic, Carlos Alvarado, participated in the negotiation space, as well as the Minister of the Presidency, Víctor Morales Mora, the Minister of Education, Guiselle Cruz, the authorities of public universities, representatives of student federations, and legislators Karine Niño, Paola Valladares and Enrique Sánchez.
The university students vandalized buildings of the University of Costa Rica, took the building of the Rectory of the National University and blocked streets in San Pedro and Heredia as pressure measures, which caused road chaos, without the intervetion of authorities.
After the dialogue initiated the previous week between government and public universities, the state universities reviewed their budgets to reclassify different items of expenditure that are considered as current expenses to account for them as capital expenses, which ensures the normal operation of these institutions.
