Rodrigo Chaves is the new finance minister

October 31, 2019 by Staff News Writer

Government authorities confirmed on Wednesday that Rodrigo Chaves, country director of the World Bank of Indonesia, will take office as Minister of Finance after Rocío Aguilar.

Chaves has a broad career in the international organization, where he previously served as Director of the Department of Poverty Reduction and Economic Management, Latin America and the Caribbean Region (LCSPR).

In his profile within the organization, they emphasize that his experience includes analytical and operational work in more than 45 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean, Eastern Europe, Central Asia, South Asia, and East Asia.

He has also worked and written on macro and microeconomic policies, including fiscal sufficiency, the quality of fiscal expenditures, the provision of public services at the local level, the development of the financial market, the private sector, entrepreneurship, credit and investment, and rural development.

Chaves also conducted joint evaluations of the World Bank financial sector and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) of emerging market economies.

Before joining the World Bank, he managed the operations of a small private bank and worked as a consultant for the Inter-American Development Bank, the World Bank and USAID.

He has a PhD in Economics from the Ohio State University of the United States.

He will assume the Treasury portfolio from November and will have challenges to continue with the impulse of the fulfillment of the Fiscal Reform, maintain stability and seek greater confidence, continue with the “responsible” policy of debt swaps so as not to pressure interest rates, comply with the orders of the Comptroller in an improvement of tax collection, among other issues.
